Cervantes, Miguel de (1547-1616)
[Don Quixote in Spanish, First Complete Edition]. El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha.

Barcelona: A costa de Raphael Vives, 1617.

A married set, two octavo volumes, each bound in contemporary limp parchment with inked titles on spines; part one in thicker boards ruled in blind; part two with remnants of alum-tawed ties; the two housed in a modern folding case covered in buckram; part one with minor expert paper repairs to the first six and final two leaves; intermittent water staining to contents (most noticeable in first few signatures), page 175/176 with stain (pale ink spill?); part two with professional paper restoration to minor losses on title page; closed tear on leaf twenty-four repaired without loss; ink spotting to D2; printing flaw to Qq1; each 6 x 4 in. (2)

Palau 51989; Rius 16; Seris 15.

DQ was published as it was written. Part one came out in 1605, followed by the 1615 sequel. Thus, all subsequent editions were printed separately up until this 1617 Barcelona version, which offered both parts at the same time. Sets are very rare on the market. The current owner united these two, in very similar bindings and condition, circa 2009. The first part was purchased from Quaritch, the second was sold in these rooms.
